Most Seattle homeowners try two or three things before calling a professional. The problem is that the most intuitive fixes are also the most counterproductive. Here’s what’s actually happening in your walls.
What most Seattle residents call “little black ants” are almost always one of three species: odorous house ants (Tapinoma sessile), little black ants (Monomorium minimum), or pavement ants (Tetramorium caespitum). They look nearly identical to the untrained eye all small, all dark, all showing up in your kitchen but they nest differently, respond to treatments differently, and most critically, they behave very differently when threatened.
Odorous house ants are the species behind the majority of Seattle kitchen infestations. When they sense a repellent spray the default response of every hardware store product their colony undergoes “budding”: the queen sends workers and larvae to form new satellite colonies away from the threat. One colony becomes two, three, or four. Instead of a problem in your kitchen, you now have a problem throughout your walls. This is the single most common reason Seattle homeowners end up calling us after multiple failed DIY attempts. See our full ant control service page for detail on each species and why identification is the critical first step.
If you have sprayed the ants you can see and the problem has spread or returned worse than before, stop spraying immediately. You likely have odorous house ants and the spray has already triggered colony splitting. Continued spraying will spread the infestation further into your walls. Call a professional exterminator before applying anything else the more satellite colonies are established, the longer treatment takes.
Which Little Black Ant Do You Have? The Crush Test Is the Fastest Answer.
The single most important thing you can do before calling an exterminator or before any treatment is applied is correctly identify the species. Here’s the fastest method professional exterminators use in the field.
Pick up a single ant and crush it between your fingers or on a hard surface. If it smells like rotten coconut, blue cheese, or fermenting fruit: you have odorous house ants the most common Seattle kitchen ant and the one most dangerous to treat with repellent spray. If there is no smell at all: you have little black ants or pavement ants different treatment approach required. If the ant is noticeably larger (¼ inch or more): you likely have carpenter ants, a more serious structural issue that requires its own treatment protocol see our carpenter ant control information.
Odorous House Ants
Tapinoma sessile
SMELLS: Rotten coconut / blue cheese1/16–1/8 inch. Dark brown to black. Move in organized trails. Attracted to sweets and moisture. Most common Seattle kitchen ant active as early as February during warm spells. Do NOT use repellent spray will cause colony budding and spread infestation. Requires slow acting professional bait.
Little Black Ants
Monomorium minimum
NO SMELL when crushed1/16 inch. Jet black. Form erratic trails. Nest in soil, cracks in wood, and wall voids. Enter homes through foundation gaps and utility penetrations. Less prone to budding than odorous house ants. Respond well to both baiting and non-repellent perimeter spray.
Pavement Ants
Tetramorium caespitum
MINIMAL / no odor1/8 inch. Brown to black with lighter legs. Nest under concrete slabs, patios, and driveways. Invade kitchens from below follow plumbing penetrations up from the slab. Require exterior perimeter treatment targeting nest sites, not just interior baiting.
Carpenter Ants
Camponotus spp.
LARGER structural risk¼–½ inch. Black or reddish-black. Found near moist wood walls, window frames, crawl spaces. Don’t eat wood but tunnel through it, causing structural damage over time. Require a separate treatment protocol. See our carpenter ant treatment page.
What Store Bought Products Do (and Why They Make It Worse)
Understanding why DIY fails for Seattle’s most common ant species is not just useful it’s the difference between resolving the problem in two weeks and chasing it around your house for three months.
✗ What store bought repellent sprays actually do
- Kill only the workers you can see the colony and queen are untouched
- Signal danger to the colony, triggering “budding” in odorous house ants
- One colony splits into 2–4 satellite colonies spread throughout your walls
- Residual chemicals break down within days outdoors in Seattle’s rain
- Diatomaceous earth becomes ineffective immediately in Seattle’s humidity
- Result: More ants, in more places, harder to treat than before
✓ What professional slow acting baiting does
- Ants pick up bait and carry it back to the nest unknowingly
- Slow acting formula allows time for workers to share it with the queen and larvae
- Both sugar based and protein based baits used to match the colony’s food preferences
- Colony collapses from within over 2–4 weeks
- Non repellent perimeter treatment stops new colonies from entering
- Entry point sealing prevents reinfestation after colony is eliminated
Diatomaceous earth works by damaging ant exoskeletons but only when completely dry. Seattle averages over 37 inches of rainfall annually and has some of the highest ambient indoor humidity in the continental US. Crawl spaces, basements, and the areas where ant colonies actually nest stay perpetually damp. DE applied in these areas becomes completely ineffective within hours to days. This is a solution designed for dry climates, not the Pacific Northwest.
How AMPM Exterminators Eliminates Little Black Ants in Seattle Homes
Every treatment begins with identification and ends with a prevention plan. Here’s the full process your technician will follow.
Species identification before any product touches your home
Your technician identifies the ant species using visual inspection and the crush-test odor. This determines whether slow acting bait, non repellent spray, or a combination approach is appropriate. Using a repellent product on odorous house ants before confirming species would make the infestation worse we never skip this step. Learn more on our ant control service page.
Interior inspection finding where the colony actually lives
We trace active trails to locate nest sites: under sinks, inside wall voids near pipes, behind dishwashers, in crawl spaces, or along baseboards near heat sources. We also check for moisture issues leaks, condensation, and damp wood because in Seattle, moisture is often the primary reason ants are inside in the first place.
Targeted slow acting baiting reaching the queen
We place professional grade slow acting bait in locations where ants are actively foraging. We use both sugar based and protein based formulations because ant dietary preferences shift seasonally and a colony will reject bait that doesn’t match its current nutritional needs. These professional bait formulations are not available over the counter. Bait is placed in locations inaccessible to pets and children. Eco friendly and family safe.
Eco friendly non repellent perimeter treatment
We apply a non repellent, water based perimeter treatment to the exterior foundation and along identified ant entry zones. Non repellent means ants walk through it and carry it back to the nest as opposed to repellent products they detect and avoid. Pet safe and family safe. Applied to exterior surfaces, not inside your living spaces.
Entry point sealing stopping reinfestation
We identify and seal the gaps ants are using to enter: foundation cracks, utility penetrations, gaps around pipes and conduits, and deteriorated caulking around windows and doors. Exclusion is the only permanent solution eliminating the current colony without sealing entry points means the same infestation will likely recur within the same season.
Prevention guidance and follow up
We’ll identify the specific attractants on your property moisture sources, vegetation touching the structure, mulch against the foundation and give you concrete recommendations. For repeat-infestation properties, we offer quarterly maintenance plans that treat the perimeter ahead of Seattle’s two peak ant seasons: March–April and September–October.

“I had tried multiple pest control companies in Seattle, but none of them were able to completely get rid of the ants that had invaded my home. Then I found AMPM Exterminators. They thoroughly inspected my home and quickly identified the root causes. Unlike the previous companies I’d worked with, AMPM didn’t just treat the visible signs they addressed the source of the problem by locating and eliminating the colonies.”
“We were dealing with a persistent issue of little black sugar ants invading the kitchens and hallways. I had tried several DIY methods and even brought in a different company months ago, but the problem kept coming back. It’s been over a month now, and the ants are completely gone. Not a single complaint since the treatment! They also gave us a prevention plan to help avoid future issues.”
“Within a day or two, the ants were completely gone and they haven’t returned since. The technician was professional, on time, and explained everything clearly. I was told which entry points the ants were using and how to keep them from coming back. I appreciate how thorough and careful they were, especially around my kitchen. Highly recommend.”
